-Brandon Gaydorus Before we can get "golf specific" or "make you a better athlete" we have to be able to become a better human first. Wait what does this mean, becoming a better human? All humans should be able to hinge, squat, carry, push, and pull heavy objects. Along with being able to have a stable core, that supports the foundation of each individual. The following is a list of 5 exercises that nearly everyone can do in some sort of way. This is possible through the use of proper progressions and regressions, of which your local trainers could help you out with! These exercises can be done at the gym, at home, or even on a stranded island with nothing but trees, coconuts, and a beach! 1.) Single Leg Deadlift: Single Leg Deadlifts aka SLDL's are one of my favorite exercises. The main reason is because most people sit all day! When you sit all day, your hamstring is in a long and weak position which makes it essentially turned off. Not only does an SLDL strengthen/activate your hamstring but is also helps work on stability of the hip joint and single leg balance. Essentially making you a better human! 2.) Lateral Crawl + Push-Up This is an exercise that can be done anywhere with space and puts an emphasis on core stability, coordination, and the push pattern. One way to challenge yourself with this exercise would be to add a push-up each week at the end of this exercise! Trust me it will get hard. This again will make you a better human! 3.) Chin-Ups During a chin-up the "human" or individual is essentially pulling their whole body weight in an upward motion and then controling their entire body with a ridiculus amount of tension in the core on the way down. Even if you can not do a chin-up there are plenty of variations that can be done such as a chin-up hold. Herschel Walker was famous for just doing push-up and chin-up variations to get himself in the best shape possible to have a successful NFL career. The reason I personally have so much respect for Herschel is that he is still in amazing shape and in his mid 50's. Therefore concluding that chin-ups will make you a better human! 4.) Farmer Carries It's no joke that farmers are strong as Sh*t! Why is that, well they carry heavy objects all day. A heavy carry forces individuals to get in the best posture possible because if you do not, you will have an unstable base and put yourself at risk of injury. On the side, farmer carries also help strengthen your grip/forearms and add some stability into your shoulders. This again will make you a better human! 5.) Split Squats What is one thing that every human wants to physically do throughout their entire life? Stand Up!!! That's right, whether your a toddler trying to step it up from crawling to your first steps or 83 years old and just want to be able to get off the chair and cook up some food! Split squats help ensure joint health in the hips, quadriceps and glute strength, and of course the ability to stand up. Again proving that this will make you a better human! Final Thoughts! To conclude, it's important to realize that these exercises are basic movements but will give you the ability to become a better athlete and improve golf specific movements. They set the ground work and foundation for individuals to be successful in life and their sports specific movements!
